he preceding
years has seen numerous discussions taking place among ministers,
elders, and other church leaders of the churches with a common
heritage of the Stone-Campbell Movement.
Members of Christian Churches, Churches of
Christ, and the Disciples of Christ members were exploring
the idea of reconciliation. Today, like then, we share common ground in faith
and heritage which spawned this Christian unity movement. No follower of Christ can deny, that this is his will!
Gal. 5:17 "For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature."
22 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control."
"And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity." Col. 3:14 |
As
these types of historic meetings and dialogue are once again
occurring across the United States, members of the Western Hills
Church of Christ in Austin, formed a committee in the year
2006 to actively explore God's call for unity among fellow
believers.
First, the committee's focus has been to the churches of the
Stone-Campbell heritage. With this in mind, on Saturday, March
25, 2006, a “Get Acquainted” Unity Breakfast for
the Austin area church leaders was held. Over 50 elders and
ministers from 20 congregations representing all 3 branches
of the movement were in attendance. From this meeting, encouragement
and support has been great, indicating that a reconciliation
of the Christians of the Stone-Campbell heritage is possible!
Secondly, the Unity Steering Committee
for the Greater Austin/Central
Texas Area Stone-Campbell Dialogue was formed to explore the
avenues of common ground and cooperative efforts between the
three branches of the Stone-Campbell Heritage.
