Christians are called to be salt and light (Matt. 5: 13,14) in our community. We will never accomplish this, nor lead the lost to Christ, when we can't seem to get along with other Christians.
What voices do you follow when it comes to Christian unity?
"Remember the words I spoke to you: 'No servant is greater than his master." (John 15: 20)
"My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me." (John 17: 20,21)
Our sinful nature leads us to live our lives to please ourselves, but the spirit of Christ is one that leads us to depend on God for strength (2 Cor. 12: 9) to achieve His purposes. (Heb.5: 9)
Often God's expectations are different than ours.
"Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart." (1 Peter 1: 22)
"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." (Galations 6: 2)
God demands that Christians look at things differently. Looking with the heart of Jesus, we will:
Care about what Jesus cared about.
Get angry about what Jesus got angry about.
Be indifferent to what Jesus was indifferent about. Jesus was indifferent about:
- Personal danger - teaching that we should only fear God.
- Religious tradition - teaching that most were barriors to God. He valued relationship over rules.
- Other's approval - He did not seek the approval of men but of God.
"I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." (Luke 18: 17)
Love builds up
Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. (1 Cor. 8:1)

Love is the most important quality in the believer's life.
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing." (1 Cor. 13: 1-4)
"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins." (1 Peter 4: 8)
Love validates our profession of faith in God.
"Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." (1 John 4: 8)
God has provides us clear instruction.
"Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. One man's faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted him. Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way." (Romans 14: 1-4; 13)
"Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it." (James 4: 11)
When love is not the first consideration, other things invariably take its place. No matter how good these might be... they cannot replace love.
"A heart of peace brings life to the body"
(Proverbs 14:30)
"I was glad when they said to me,
"Let us go to the house of the LORD."
For the sake of the house of the LORD our God,
I will seek your good."
(Psalms 122: 1,9)
Christian unity blesses the disciple and those who see God's love in us.
How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!
For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore. (Psalms 133: 1, 3)
